Who is Stan Hawkins?

I have lived in various parts of the United State, leaving Pennsylvania for Los Angeles at 17, a brief stop in Vietnam, then back to California, up to Minnesota and back again to California, currently residing in Paso Robles….. tomorrow who knows where.

As basically a self taught artist I have explored as many different mediums that interested me as possible.  I seem to have gravitated toward 3 dimensional objects; art by addition or art by subtraction.

My artistic career started 50 years ago although I didn’t know it at the time.  Young and bored on a Sunday morning my mother sat me down on the end of the sofa and encouraged me to draw the characters from the comic strips in the paper.  Sunday after Sunday I would sit for hours and draw such characters as Dagwood, Captain and the kid’s Prince Valiant and entire cool strips of my time.

One thing led to another and painting by the numbers was next followed by that artistic test that we all have seen on the inside of match books and many evening courses at the local junior college and a two year college program majoring in what else, art.

While in LA I was introduced to a lady who inspired me to take a very large step in my evolution.  She was to me a mentor and through her constant encouragement and examples of wonderful carousel figures I began to find my way to the world of sculpture.

My Art education continues, attending sculpture workshops every year in both Kansas City and Colorado.

Today I enjoy all aspects of art whether it is looking at it, thinking about it or doing it.  It is what consumes my thoughts and not a day goes by that I am not finding freedom in it. Whenever everything around me is not making sense, art is my refuge; it always makes sense.  My passion is my art.  I find art to be a process of discovery; taking an idea from a rough concept, repeatedly refining it until a three dimensional objects is sitting in front of me.
